Tondi Barracks
The walls of Tondi Barracks have seen successive regimes, while soldiers’ daily lives were shaped by drills and orders.
The Tondi barracks complex was built for military use in the imperial Russian period. After Estonian independence the district became an important centre of military training; later occupations brought other users. The survival of a building does not mean the same institution occupied it throughout. A barracks also reveals power in ordinary routines: schedules, movement rules and exercises. Along today’s Tondi Street, the scale of the older buildings suggests how much urban space military life once required.
