Lost Canals of Kadriorg Park
The water history of Kadriorg Park lies within its designed landscape, where channels and drainage supported the garden.
A baroque park did not appear by itself. Straight sightlines, ponds and planted areas required planning and the movement of water. Later alterations may have filled, diverted or hidden older channels, leaving walkers with a modern landscape. A hollow or damp patch alone cannot establish the course of an old waterway; that calls for comparison of plans from different periods and study of the ground. The lost water system recalls how much work even a seemingly natural park requires.
