House of Peter the Great
Peter the Great’s house in Kadriorg gives an imperial story a human scale beside the grand palace.
The large palace can draw attention away from the smaller house associated with Peter I’s stays in Tallinn. Its rooms suggest that rulers did not live only in ceremonial halls. The house also belongs to a wider story: under Peter’s rule Tallinn came under the Russian Empire, and the development of Kadriorg expressed a new order. The modest building’s appeal should not obscure what conquest and a change of power meant for the city and its inhabitants.
