Tallinn’s Lost Gallows

Tallinn’s vanished gallows recall a time when punishment was meant to be seen by people approaching the city.

A gallows site was more than a place of execution. Visible punishment told passers-by who held judicial power and how orders were enforced. Urban growth, altered roads and later building have removed such landmarks from the modern streetscape. Sites from different centuries should not be collapsed into one exact point: identifying them requires comparison of old maps, court records and place names. The absence of a structure can make violence less visible, but it does not erase its place in the city’s public life.
