Toompea Schlossgericht Court
The Schlossgericht recalls that Toompea had a jurisdiction distinct from Tallinn’s merchants’ Lower Town.
Historical records use the name Schlossgericht for court authority connected with Toompea Castle. It reflects an older Tallinn divided between administrative and legal territories: people on Toompea and in the merchants’ Lower Town did not always answer to the same power. A sentence could lead to punishment beyond the urban centre. That boundary is no longer visible on the square, but once shaped residents’ rights and fates.
