Medieval Fire Regulations of Tallinn

Medieval Tallinn’s rules about fire sought to reduce the danger of open flames in a densely built walled town.

Fire was needed every day for heating and cooking. Among narrow streets, timber structures and closely spaced roofs, a single accident could threaten many households. Fire prevention therefore concerned the whole town: hearths, supplies and the risk to neighbours all mattered. Particular bans or fines should be read from period regulations rather than invented. City walls could resist some threats from outside, but a fire beginning inside a house demanded shared vigilance.
