Public Floggings in the Market Square
Corporal punishment in the marketplace was directed at the person harmed and at the wider city watching.
Town Hall Square was a place of trade, but also a public setting where officials could display their judgements. Corporal punishment humiliated and injured the person sentenced; its public form was meant to affect onlookers as well. The crowd was part of how the penalty worked. Exact locations, instruments and cases changed over time. Without a source, no paving stone in today’s square can be presented as the site of every punishment.
