The Plague Doctor in Tallinn’s Imagination
The beaked plague doctor is a familiar image, but its use in Tallinn cannot be claimed without local evidence.
The long-beaked mask has become an instantly recognisable image of European plague history. For a modern viewer it conveys disease, fear and the limits of past medicine. The image’s wider circulation does not prove that Tallinn physicians wore the same costume. The city’s experience of plague is real without a beaked mask: caring for the sick and burying the dead depended on the knowledge and resources available at the time.
