The dark ceiling and old timber of the Church of the Holy Spirit give its historic interior a distinctive depth.
The Church of the Holy Spirit feels different from many brightly finished churches. Its timber and darker ceiling draw attention to the effect of materials and light on a sacred space. For centuries people have worshipped, sung and commemorated the dead here. Without study, however, the colour of a ceiling cannot be attributed only to candle smoke or a single funerary practice: repairs and design choices also shaped the interior.
