Lightning Strikes on St Olaf’s Church
The exceptional height of St Olaf’s tower exposed it to lightning that could set the church ablaze.
For centuries, St Olaf’s tower rose far above Tallinn’s rooftops. This made it a landmark from the sea but also left it exposed in thunderstorms. A fire in the tower could spread downwards, and rebuilding demanded substantial labour and money. The cause of each historical fire still needs its own evidence: not every blaze at St Olaf’s can automatically be attributed to lightning.
