Tallinn’s Oldest Public Clock
The clock at the Church of the Holy Spirit brought shared time to townspeople before personal timepieces were common.
The clock visible from the street at the Church of the Holy Spirit put time into the daily movement of the Old Town. When many people had no watch of their own, a public clock helped coordinate meetings, work and prayer. Church bells carried that shared schedule further across the neighbourhood. Read the facade as part of the city’s old timekeeping infrastructure: clocks did more than decorate buildings. Any claim to be the oldest depends on which kinds of timepiece are compared.
