Härjapea River
The Härjapea River powered Tallinn’s industry before the growing city enclosed its polluted course underground.
The Härjapea once flowed openly through Tallinn, driving mills and workshops. As population and industry increased, it became increasingly burdened with waste water. Eventually the river was enclosed and its visible bed disappeared beneath streets. Near Jõe Street, there may be no water to see, yet maps and place names reveal another urban landscape. Its subterranean course is infrastructure, not a public passage.
