Mysterious Vaults at the Coastal Gate
Underground vaults described near the Coastal Gate inspired tunnel stories, but a vault alone does not prove a secret passage.
Excavation near the Coastal Gate in the 1930s revealed old masonry and vaulted structures. A room beneath street level invited visions of hidden routes stretching across the city. The inference is not automatic: a vault might have belonged to a fortification, cellar or other structure. Identifying its purpose requires excavation records and architectural comparison. Even without the legend, the find opens a layer of the city no longer visible from the street.
