Gallows Hill
Võllamägi was an execution site for centuries; excavated human remains give its history a human scale.
Death sentences were carried out at Võllamägi in the Liivalaia Street area. Archaeological work in the 1990s revealed physical traces of this past, including numerous human remains. In legal records, a person can disappear behind an accusation or a sentence; what survived in the ground recalls that each judgement affected a real body. The present-day streetscape covers an execution landscape that is no longer immediately visible.
