Stolting Tower

Stolting Tower recalls that the defence of a medieval city wall depended on named people and their duties.

Stolting Tower on Laboratooriumi Street bears a person’s name. Medieval urban defence was more than stonework and weapons: maintaining towers, keeping watch and preparing for danger required the participation of townspeople. The surviving name lends a human scale to the long wall. Behind a single tower stood a system of obligations on which the town relied in a crisis.
