Kiek in de Kök
Kiek in de Kök was a powerful artillery tower defending the vulnerable approaches to Toompea through several sieges.
Tallinn’s first artillery tower was completed in its original form in 1483. Thick walls, gun openings and an elevated position allowed defenders to observe the approaches and use heavy firearms. Its Low German name means a look into the kitchen, joking that guards could see into houses below. The museum inside explores Tallinn’s fortifications, warfare and the everyday lives of the people who defended them.
