Nun’s Gate

Nunne Gate connected the Lower Town with western roads but disappeared with the arrival of the railway and modern traffic.

Nunne Gate stood on an important route leading west from the Old Town. Nineteenth-century modernisation transformed the boundary of the fortified city: the railway, station and growing traffic required space, and the gate was demolished. Its removal opened the Old Town towards the railway station but erased the clear threshold where travellers once entered a walled town.
