Fish Market
The fish market at Kalasadam connected Tallinn’s kitchens directly with the sea, fishermen and everyday harbour work.
The arrival of the catch set the market’s daily rhythm. Fish had to be unloaded, sorted and sold quickly, because freshness was short-lived before refrigeration. The smells of salt water, fish, tar and wet timber mingled in the air. This was a workplace rather than a romantic seafront: income depended on weather, the catch and willing buyers. Kalasadam still carries Tallinn’s old connection with the sea and the food trade.
