Town Hall Square

Town Hall Square was the centre of Tallinn’s trade, civic power and public life for centuries.

Town Hall Square was far more than a medieval marketplace. Municipal orders were announced here, deals were made, celebrations were held and public punishments were carried out before the townspeople. The surrounding buildings recall a society in which status, reputation and one’s place in the community were visible to everyone. Beneath today’s cafés and events survives the layered history of Tallinn’s most important public space.
