Russian Market
The Russian Market beyond Viru Gate connected the walled town, its suburb and trade routes arriving from the east.
The Russian Market developed outside Viru Gate, where the walled town met its suburb and the roads approaching from the east. Merchants, peasants, carts and news passed through this area before entrants crossed the controlled gateway into the Old Town. The market shows that the wall was more than a defence: it separated different rules, taxes and privileges. Modern traffic around Viru Square conceals the traces of this former arrival point.
