Pox House outside the Great Coastal Gate
A separate hospital for syphilis patients stood outside the Great Coastal Gate.
Here the term pox house referred to the so-called Spanish pox, or syphilis. Because of infection risk, the hospital was placed beyond the city wall in front of the Great Coastal Gate. During the Livonian War it also served as a military position.
