Dunkri Street Nightlife
In the early 20th century, Dunkri Street was an Old Town centre of taverns, rented rooms and concealed sex work.
Dunkri Street after dark differed sharply from the orderly commercial city seen by day. Taverns, cheap rooms and paid intimacy attracted sailors, labourers, visitors and the women who served them. Municipal authorities treated this world with contradiction: tolerating and monitoring it while also attaching shame to those involved. The street’s history shows entertainment, survival and official control existing side by side within one narrow Old Town quarter.
